As part of Challenge 81, BBC Introducing in Suffolk have returned to the John Peel Centre to showcase three talented local bands, but this time with a difference! Instead of performing in front of a live audience, each band have recorded live sets on the John Peel Centre stage, and they will be premiered on YouTube at 7.30pm on Friday 31st July, Friday 7th August, and Friday 14th August. The third of these performances is from Joseph Lawrence & The Garden.
Joseph Lawrence & The Garden come together to create music greater than the sum of their parts. The London-based collective – comprised of vocalist Joseph Lawrence and instrumentalist Gibbi Bettini (The Garden). The lead single “Eclipse” combines the free-jazz ambition of Kendrick Lamar with the nocturnal ambience of James Blake for a sound that’s both musically complex and bursting with soul. The pair met three years ago with no real plan behind what they were doing. At the time, Gibbi was working with a few different artists, but was attracted to Joseph due to the distinctive nature of his vocals. A voice that’s part D’Angelo, part Donny Hathaway and just a smidge of Terence Trent D’Arby. “I like things being quite unique and extreme. With Joe it was both of those things.”
Go to our YouTube channel at 7.30pm, Friday 14th August to see the amazing Joseph Lawrence & The Garden and the other BBC Introducing in Suffolk Sessions.
