Mighty Sands + Animal Noise + Warm Winters + Sun Scream @ John Peel Centre

Proving that surf rock isn’t all about Dick Dale, Mighty Sands are a five-piece pizza band from Lisbon that blend colourful guitar sounds with simple but danceable rhythms along with early 70s keyboards and blinkin’-an-eye-to-psychedelia pedals. All combined, we get a hot-n’-chill vibe that comes all the way (in slow waves) from the western side of America: California.

Their journey started in late 2013 when Teresa and Chaby first met. Writing songs in their bedroom, they certainly needed someone else to join the happy vessel and make songs real. Since then, it’s been a pretty ‘n pink adventure: they put out their EPs which are called BIG PINK vol.1 (2015) and BIG PINK vol.2 (2016).

Together, the band also started an all-cassette DIY label called Spring Toast Records based on love, friendship, analogue recording and unforgettable parties. They have already played with bands like Dirty Fences, Go!Zilla, The Holydrug Couple, The Blank Tapes, Tomorrows Tulips or Real Estate.

‘Once upon a time known as Los Black Jews, the Portuguese Mighty Sands play surf rock. Play psych rock. Play garage rock. Play songs (..) ’ – TimeOut Magazine (2016)

‘Mighty Sands are definitely in the school of the Allah-Las but are such brilliant players and performers that they mesmerize the audience. They told me after the show that they’ve got an analog-only cassette label going.’ – Banana Magazine (2016)

‘What can we expect from a Mighty Sands live performance? A gateway to surf rock , desert allusions, cosmos and sea (..) The quintet, with one female presence that leads the experience, creates a post-rock-dreamy environment that feels very chill and it’s true to a virtuous stage aura.’ – Curly Mess (2016)

Support from Animal Noise, Warm Winters and Sun Scream

Animal Noise are a Colchester-based alternative rock band. They have had an impressive run on the UK summer festival season this year, with a string of arresting performances at Bestival, Boardmasters, Blue Dot, British Summer Time Festival, Fling, Standon Calling, Ramsbottom Festival, T In The Park, and Wilkstock amongst others. To put the cherry on top, the band were also invited to play at the legendary Hammersmith Apollo ahead of an anniversary screening of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars Show live at the venue.

Their efforts have picked up love by key tastemakers including God Is In The TV, Louder Than War, Indie Band Guru and XS Noize, and the band have had no trouble turning heads amongst the press. Their previous single ‘Little Things’ from their EP enjoyed radio airplay from BBC 6 Music, Virgin Radio BBC Introducing, and SOHO Radio, with a healthy momentum building as appetite for new music from the trio continues to grow.

Quickly picking up steam, and with an ever-increasing array of champions behind them, Animal Noise evoke promises of a band who could be here to stay for a long time to come, reminding us all why we fell in love with alternative rock in the first place.

Animal Noise have a new single out on 3rd November 2017: ‘Fly’.
